Climate Change in the News: what's the reality of it?

It is my opinion, that the narrative regarding climate change is still very much linked to the interests of the consumers. What I mean by this, is that it seems that the newspapers tend to publish articles related to climate change only when some environmental hazard is happening at the moment, and therefore the audience to the information will be more attracted to reading the article, or, on the other hand, if the public opinion towards environmentalism and its awareness is moving towards more conscious choices, such as it's been happening in the recent years.

Let me elaborate my view on this. I can notice in my short lifespan, that the interest, perception and severity towards climate change has been consistently growing. I remember being a child and my former Austrian region in the North of Italy was one of the few if not the only which provided to the citizens recycling areas to separate the waste. In only a few decades, certainly also with the help of the political and news coverage over the topic, the trend has changed as to having almost all regions in Italy onboarded on a systematic recycling cycle.
Nonetheless, I still believe that the media find it convenient to address climate change related events only in the moment when the topic is "hot". See for example the huge drought in Europe during last Summer. The coverage on this topic has exponentially grown in the two months of summer due to the unprecedented spike in temperature, even though droughts have always a usual recurrent situation especially in the Southern regions of Europe.
The consequence to this kind of interested news reporting is therefore that individuals might not consider the topic as urgent until it's not actually reported by several providers.

However, one very interesting and delightful information which I acquired by reading some articles about media coverage of climate change is that 90% of media coverage accurately represented the scientific consensus that human activity is driving global warming (as published in August 2021 by Lucy McAllister et al 2021 Environ. Res. Lett.). One of the main reason for this change is coming from the growing scientific certainty.
This also would probably prove a decrease in the spreading of climate scepticism, which is easily proven by the difficulty in finding many articles from 2015 onwards trying to confute the climate change evidence.

In conclusion, my biggest advice to people wanted to be accurately informed, it's always to search answers to their questions directly at the sources: published and peer reviewed scientific publications. This is the best and most unbiased way to be able to reach the correct factual reality without the information being manipulated by a middle party.
However, I acknowledge the educational restrictions many people might have in reading such elaborated scientific publications. For this reason, my best advice is to find a few renamed newspapers from different political stands to always read and rely on and always check the sources for each articles which corroborate the information.
I believe that reading too much news without filtering first the providers creates as well an overwhelming feeling of confusion to the average reader. It is highly important therefore that people are firstly educated on how to choose the newspaper to read from, after this it will be up to them to ALWAYS corroborate the data and facts as accurate or biased.
Most of all, everyone should always try to make themselves informed by first handedly researching relevant topics and not waiting for the click bait pop up to be the only source of information they have.
